MOTHER 1+2 Mr. Saturn Statue

The MOTHER 1+2 Mr. Saturn Statue is a promotional item that was released in Japan in 2003. The statues were given away as door prizes to at least 10 lucky fans who attended the MOTHER 1+2 Tsutaya Release Party. MOTHER 1+2 is a compilation port of two classic role-playing games that was released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan on June 20, 2003.

It’s estimated that only 10-20 of these Mr. Saturn statues exist, though the exact number remains unknown. Shigesato Itoi, the creator of the MOTHER series, is known to still have at least one statue in his possession.

Item details

No official information is known about these statues, so fans have done a lot of guesswork. Judging from photos, it is assumed that the MOTHER 1+2 Mr. Saturn Statue is approximately 2 feet tall when you include the strand of hair on top.

The material the statues are made of is not known, though Styrofoam seems like the best candidate because the statues were hung from the ceiling at the MOTHER 1+2 event, so they had to have been made of a light-weight material. A slightly damaged Mr. Saturn statue showed up on Yahoo! Auctions Japan in the summer of 2003 where a small chip in the statue revealed a white material underneath the paint, which is another reason fans think the statues might be made of Styrofoam.

Critical reception

It goes without saying that the MOTHER 1+2 Mr. Saturn Statue is a highly coveted piece of swag among MOTHER fans. It was created before official Mr. Saturn plushes and figures were made widely available throughout Japan thanks to Banpresto, and this statue remains the biggest Mr. Saturn “figure” ever made. Add all that to the fact that it received an extremely limited production run and it’s clear why super fans and collectors are always on the lookout for it on auction sites.
