MOTHER 1+2 Hobonichi x The King of Games Mr. Saturn T-Shirt

The MOTHER 1+2 Hobonichi x The King of Games Mr. Saturn T-Shirt is a limited edition shirt that was released in Japan in 2003 for 3,300 yen by Hobonichi. It was the result of a collaboration between Hobonichi and The King of Games to celebrate the release of MOTHER 1+2 on the Game Boy Advance.

Known to western MOTHER (EarthBound) fans as simply “the phone shirt,” this special shirt was made available to order on the Hobonichi website until May 24, 2003. It was also sold in limited quantities at the MOTHER 1+2 Tsutaya Release Party.

Background information

Hobonichi is the name of Shigesato Itoi’s company’s website. Shigesato Itoi is the creator of the MOTHER series, though he’s most well-known in Japan as a famous copywriter. Mr. Itoi’s Hobonichi company produces various daily life products and different types of apparel. Hobonichi made special shirts to commemorate the release of both MOTHER 1+2 and MOTHER 3.

The King of Games is a Japanese t-shirt company that’s licensed to produce official Nintendo t-shirts. They make shirts based on games ranging from Super Mario Bros. to Clu Clu Land. The King of Games has made several MOTHER-related shirts over the years.

The MOTHER 1+2 Hobonichi x The King of Games Mr. Saturn T-Shirt was part of Hobonichi’s “Best Standard” 2003 line of t-shirts. The front of the shirt shows a small image of the telephone sprite from MOTHER 2. On the back is a very small sprite of Mr. Saturn.
