The EarthBound Mach Pizza Air Freshener was released in North America in 1995. It was the prize for correctly identifying the mystery smell card at the back of the EarthBound Player’s Guide. It has been reported that people who answered incorrectly still received the air freshener.
When marketing EarthBound, Nintendo of America (NOA) came up with a campaign using “This Game Stinks” as the slogan. There are many different elements to EarthBound that make it a good game, but NOA decided to focus on the fact that you have to fight a giant pile of puke at various points in the game. Therefore, EarthBound’s campaign featured a few scratch-n-sniff items that emitted particularly bad smells.
EarthBound came packaged with an official player’s guide. At the back of the guide are 6 scratch-n-sniff cards that represent the aromas you might encounter while playing the game. The last card was a mystery smell and you were encourage to guess the correct smell and mail the card back to Nintendo for a prize. The answer was “pizza”, so the prize was a pizza-smelling air freshener shaped like the Mach Pizza delivery man.
